The 43rd Hong Kong Arts Festival Finale

On March 28th, the 43rd Hong Kong Arts Festival officially celebrated its official finale with the performance of Jewels by the Bolshoi Ballet. Mr. Tsang Tak-sing, Acting Chief Secretary for Administration and our Guest of honour, proposed a toast to mark the conclusion of this major annual international event.

Hong Kong’s Yue Opera Superfan

Yue opera fans are mostly older female, but in Hong Kong, there’s a superfan called Jonathan and he’s young.

Jonathan was 6 in 1983, “I remember Five Daughters Offering Felicitations most vividly. It was grand, lots of characters, the costumes were beautiful. The story’s quite complicated. My mum’s a Yue opera fan, so every time they came to Hong Kong, she took me, and I grew to like it too. Because of that, I’ve got a large collection of their cassettes as well as their house programmes from each of their Hong Kong visit, as well as hundreds of DVDs and videos tapes.”

Arvo Pärt received cultural award equivalent to Nobel Prize

Three weeks ago on 15 October, the Japan Art Association in Tokyo presented Arvo Pärt with the prestigious Praemium Imperiale cultural award, considered equal to the Nobel Prize in the field of culture. The Imperiale prize has been presented since 1989 by the Japanese imperial family through the Japan Art Association. Hitachi, Prince of Japan, and honorary patron of the association personally presented Pärt with the award.

In celebration of Pärt’s 80th birthday in 2015, Theatre of Voices performs a programme of the composers’s most beautiful choral music.

The 43rd Hong Kong Arts Festival Kick-off Press Conference

The 43rd Hong Kong Arts Festival Kick-off Press Conference was held on 13 October, announcing details on 137 performances, featuring 49 international and local ensembles or solo artists.

The press conference was hosted by Ronald Arculli, Chairman of the Hong Kong Arts Festival Society, Tisa Ho, Executive Director; and Grace Lang, Programme Director. Over 120 guests attended the press conference: journalists, representatives from the arts community, members of supporting and sponsoring organisations, and artists participating in the 43rd HKAF.

Heart of Coral Rerun in Taiwan!

Live at Datong – The Chinese Utopia trailer shooting

Datong – The Chinese Utopia, the all new chamber opera production is on the way! Commissioned and produced by the Hong Kong Arts Festival, writer and filmmaker Evans Chan - the librettist of Datong, gathered with composer Chan Hing-yan, director Tang Shu-wing and conductor Lio Kuokman in the making of Datong’s promotional trailer. Set at the turn of the 20th century, the opera explores Kang Youwei’s vision of a global utopia and promises to be a dramatic and fascinating spectacle.

Yue opera superstar Mao Weitao returned to the place where Yue opera began, Shengzhou, with young Yue opera actresses in June to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the opera company she leads, Zhejiang Xiaobaihua Yue Opera Troupe. They were warmly welcomed by fans, Shengzhou local and visiting media.
